Liberia’s Deputy Information Minister, Daniel Sando, has sharply criticised prominent human rights lawyer Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe over his questions about the outcomes of President Joseph Boakai’s recent visit to the United States.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular Thursday press briefing, Sando accused Gongloe of overlooking the diplomatic and economic benefits of the President’s international engagements.
“Maybe Cllr. Gongloe’s eyeglasses are so tainted that he cannot see what the President came with,” Sando said.
The Deputy Minister also dismissed suggestions that the President should have returned with tangible items, arguing that international diplomatic engagements should not be judged by what a leader physically brings home.
According to Sando, President Boakai “did not go to a supermarket” and should not be expected to return with a suitcase full of goods.
He explained that the President’s visit included engagements with Liberians living in the United States, senior American officials, international leaders and potential investors.
Sando maintained that the discussions were aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations, attracting investment and advancing Liberia’s development priorities.
The remarks highlight a growing political disagreement over how the government communicates and measures the outcomes of presidential trips abroad.
While the Deputy Minister defended the visit as an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships, questions remain over what specific agreements, investment commitments or other measurable outcomes resulted from the engagements.
