Gongloe Calls for Ethical Leadership at Liberia History & Leadership Summit 2026

MONROVIA, Liberia — Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe has called on young Liberians to embrace integrity and responsible leadership, emphasizing the importance of placing public interests at the center of government decision-making.

Gongloe made the remarks while delivering the keynote address at the Liberia History & Leadership Summit 2026, where discussions focused on leadership, public service, and the role of young people in shaping Liberia’s future.

“Government is a place to serve, not to steal. Governance is for the people, not the pockets,” Gongloe said, underscoring the need for public officials to prioritize citizens’ welfare over personal interests.

His message comes amid continuing public discussions about governance, the management of state resources, and the delivery of essential services in Liberia. The remarks highlighted the expectations citizens place on public officials to act in the national interest and use their positions responsibly.

At the same time, improving governance requires more than individual commitments to honesty. Effective public service also depends on strong institutions, clear rules, consistent enforcement, and the capacity of government agencies to deliver services efficiently. These broader considerations remain important to efforts aimed at strengthening public confidence in government.

Gongloe’s address placed young Liberians at the center of the conversation, encouraging them to approach leadership as a responsibility to their communities and country. Young people, whether pursuing careers in public administration, business, civil society, or politics, have opportunities to contribute to national development through their professional conduct and civic engagement.

The summit provided a platform for conversations about leadership and national development, highlighting the relationship between personal integrity, institutional responsibility, and the public’s expectations of those entrusted with authority.

The event was associated with the Liberia Diplomatic Club, the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development, and UNDP Liberia.

As discussions about Liberia’s future continue, the challenge remains to translate calls for ethical leadership into practical measures that improve public services, strengthen institutions, and create greater opportunities for citizen
